A 41-year-old man was arrested in connection with the discovery of a woman’s body on Macassar Beach by a fisherman on May 27.
The police opened an inquest docket when the body was discovered. An autopsy later revealed that she had been raped, killed, and abandoned on Macassar Beach.
According to the Daily Voice, the deceased was a 23-year-old woman from Voorbrug, Delft.
Four bodies were recently discovered in the area, and specialised detectives have been deployed to assist local sleuths in their investigations.
Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie stated that the arrest on Monday night, June 12, was the outcome of a comprehensive, evidence-based inquiry that included forensic evidence processing.
“Through the presentation of adequate evidence, the investigation team obtained a warrant for the arrest of the suspect at the Bellville magistrates’ court. Armed with this warrant of arrest, the investigation team pounced on the residence of the 41-year-old suspect, where he was arrested last night, 12 June 2023. “
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. He will be charged with murder.
Acting Western Cape police commissioner Major-General Bongani Maqashalala thanked the investigation team and hopes the discovery will bring some relief to the deceased’s family. Maqashalala stated that heightened high-density patrols would be maintained in Macassar.
The most popular theory among Macassar residents, including Ward Councillor Peter Helfrich, is that people are being killed somewhere and dumped in the area, which is extremely dark owing to ongoing power outages.
On May 22, Helfrich issued an open letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa regarding the prolonged power disruptions in a suburb in his Ward. “I write to you from one of the darkest places in South Africa,” read the letter’s opening.
