Accused number 11, Joel Makhetha, has been granted bail by the Bloemfontein Magistrate court in the case of the Thabo Bester prison escape.
Makhetha, along with accused number 12, Moeketsi Ramolula, appeared in court on Tuesday morning to seek bail. However, Ramolula was not granted bail.
The charges against the two individuals include corruption, violation of a body, and aiding and abetting Thabo Bester, a notorious Facebook rapist and convicted murderer, in his escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in May last year.
Magistrate Estelle De Lange addressed accused number 11, stating, “You are currently in custody, and bail has been set at an amount of R10,000. The following conditions apply: upon payment of the bail amount, you must report to the Bloemspruit Police Station on Mondays between 8 o’clock in the morning and 4 o’clock in the afternoon.”
“You are also prohibited from having direct or indirect contact with the state witnesses. Furthermore, you are not permitted to leave Bloemfontein without notifying the investigating officers in this case. I warn you to appear before this court at 8:30 in the morning and remain present should bail be granted.”
“Failure to appear will result in the issuance of an arrest warrant, provisional cancellation of your bail, and forfeiture of your bail money to the state.”
Up to this point, a total of 12 individuals, including Bester, have been arrested. Among them, seven suspects, including Makhetha, have been released on bail.
Ramolula will remain in custody until the 8th of August, when all 12 suspects, including Bester and his accomplice Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, are scheduled to appear together in court again.
