The Police in Modjadjiskloof, Mopani District have made significant arrests in connection with human trafficking and money laundering.
On Sunday, 29 October 2023, the police apprehended a 28-year-old male suspect for human trafficking, two male suspects aged 33 and 47 for money laundering, and 23 undocumented male suspects for contravention of the Immigration Act.

The arrests took place at Mooketsi outside Tzaneen along the R81 road, following an alert from two taxi associations. The associations reported a white minibus Toyota Quantum traveling from north to south with 25 occupants. When the police arrived at the scene, they found two South African male suspects, a driver, and his accomplice, along with 23 Somalian national suspects.
During the operation, a gold Volkswagen Golf suddenly appeared and the driver of the Quantum boarded the Golf, speeding away and evading arrest. However, the police discovered 64 cross-border permits in the Toyota Quantum, indicating possible involvement in illegal activities.

They demanded the release of the 28-year-old male suspect, claiming that they had given him a lift to Brits in the North West province in the Quantum. However, the police became suspicious and upon searching the vehicle, they found R415,820.00 in cash hidden underneath the seat.

The cases involving minor suspects are being processed with the assistance of the Department of Home Affairs and Social Development. Investigations into the cases of human trafficking, money laundering, and contravention of the Immigration Act are currently underway.

The police have launched a manhunt for the suspect responsible for human trafficking, who fled the scene in a Volkswagen Golf. Anyone with information that can assist in tracing the suspect is urged to contact the Investigating Officer, Captain Mohale Raholane, at 082 445 7600. Information can also be reported to the nearest Police Station or to Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Alternatively, individuals can share information anonymously on the MySAPS App.
The three suspects are expected to appear before the Bolobedu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 31 October 2023.
