I was completely unaware of the existence of a sequel to Bird Box until it premiered on Netflix yesterday. To my surprise, the sequel takes place in Barcelona, Spain, a far cry from where we last saw Sandra Bullock’s character. Strangely enough, Bird Box Barcelona surpasses the original film in terms of quality. Although I wasn’t particularly fond of the original, I thoroughly enjoyed the Barcelona-based sequel, despite contradicting the opinions of critics and viewers. The original Bird Box received a 64% rating from critics and a 58% rating from audiences, whereas Bird Box Barcelona has received a 48% rating from critics and a 55% rating from audiences.
Had I looked up these scores beforehand, I might have chosen to skip the movie altogether, considering the abundance of other options in my backlog. However, I’m grateful that I didn’t, and I’m content with being among the minority who appreciate this film. Despite the absence of Sandra Bullock, who undoubtedly shined in the first film, the overall story and narrative arc in Barcelona are superior.
The film revolves around the talented Mario Casas, portraying the character of Sebastian, a survivor journeying through the apocalyptic streets of the city with his daughter. In this new installment, looking at mysterious creatures outside leads to instant self-inflicted death, with only a select few turning into murderous raiders instead.
What truly captivated me about the film was an unexpected twist that is best left unspoiled. The element of surprise caught me off guard, and I hope it does the same for you. This twist completely reshapes the narrative structure, creating a more compelling plot than Bullock’s original.
Some have voiced their disappointment in not getting a direct visual depiction of the monsters. However, the film does provide in-depth explanations regarding the monsters’ behavior, which, from a sci-fi standpoint, is quite logical and satisfying. I found these explanations sufficient, without the need for a giant CGI creature on the screen.
