According to Zinzi Hani, the spokesperson for the Hawks in the Western Cape, Karrim submitted the fraudulent paperwork back in October 2010.
He applied for vehicle finance through Westbank at Ottery Toyota, inflating his bank statements and providing fake payslips while applying for a vehicle valued at R665,635.
Hani explained that Karrim failed to make his monthly payments and neglected to inform the bank about the whereabouts of the vehicle after he sub-rented it.
The fraudulent activity came to light when the person who rented the vehicle attempted to cross the Beitbridge into Zimbabwe in 2012.
Karrim was arrested in 2015 but later absconded during court proceedings.
The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team managed to locate and re-arrest him on a warrant of arrest related to his previous court absences in 2022.
Karrim surrendered to the team on August 22, 2022, due to contempt of court charges.
Previously, Karrim had been granted bail of R5,000 for both cases.
