Dineo Ranaka has returned to social media to share an update with her followers weeks after revealing she was battling suicidal thoughts. The media personality recently disclosed her doctor’s diagnosis about her mental health while in the US for the Shisanyama festival.
Dineo revealed she had severe chronic depression after experiencing sleep seizures, confusion, trouble waking up, trouble controlling her bladder, thoughts about harming herself and deep empathy with those who have taken their lives. “I feel like I need to allow myself to reintroduce myself to myself because I’ve been a high-functioning person with depression. And this is dangerous. Very dangerous,” she wrote.
“I’ve been physically sick. Really physically sick. I’ve suspected myself to not be well for a bit over two months. And eventually I know why,” she wrote.
Determination to fight through
Dineo said she is determined to fight through and emphasises with those who have taken their own lives. “At the end of it all I am here now. I’m trying to learn how to move forward without thinking I’m a fraud. It’s really hard on me. And if you knew half the judgment I’m dealing with you would probably want to have yourself admitted and never discharged. But I have faith in me. I believe in myself. I will be cured. Depression is curable,” she wrote.
“The biggest question is: Is Dineo suicidal? The answer was yes but is now no. It is not easy to break the curse. I have to believe and say I’m not,” she wrote.
Encouragement for others
Dineo encouraged people who have experienced the same symptoms to seek help. “Mental health is so insanely misunderstood because depression is not the absence of happiness, so essentially it is not sadness,” she wrote. “It is the absence of vitality. Vitality being the zest to live.”
Taking time for herself
“Generally, I don’t like long captions, but I didn’t have the energy to shoot a video for you. I’m taking time to myself to sort out the messes in different areas of my life. But, hey, I’m doing it nonetheless,” she wrote.
