A driving instructor named Doctor Moloi (29) and a traffic officer named Sipho Malinga (44) faced charges of corruption in the Vrede Magistrate’s Court.
The court appearance was brief, occurring on Tuesday.
The Serious Corruption Investigation team of the Free State Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (commonly known as the Hawks) received information about corrupt activities involving Moloi and Malinga.
Captain Christopher Singo, the spokesperson for the Hawks, stated that Malinga worked as an examiner at the Vrede Traffic Department testing station, while Moloi owned a driving school.
Allegedly, Moloi would identify individuals seeking learner’s licenses and provide their information to Malinga, ensuring their success in the tests.
Acting on this information, the police conducted an operation between October 2022 and November 2022, which confirmed that Moloi and Malinga were collaborating and sharing the proceeds of their illegal activities.
On June 22, 2023, a warrant for the arrest of both individuals was issued, and they were subsequently apprehended on July 4, appearing in court on the same day.
The court granted them bail of R2,000 each, and the case was postponed until July 24.
