The Border Management Authority (BMA) has recently made a significant drug bust at the OR Tambo International Airport cargo terminal.
During a routine inspection, officials discovered over eight kilogrammes of Rohypnol, commonly known as the “date rape drug,” concealed within a consignment of dried fish. The drugs had arrived on a flight from Nigeria.

Rohypnol, classified as a Schedule 6 drug in South Africa, is a powerful and dangerous substance frequently used as a date rape drug both locally and internationally.
It is often employed by perpetrators at parties, raves, and clubs to facilitate sexual assault and rape, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.
The successful operation at the bustling airport involved officials from the Border Management Authority, Customs officials of the SA Revenue Service (Sars), and the SA Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAPHRA).
A case is currently being registered with the South African Police Service to initiate further investigation and legal proceedings.
Dr. Michael Masiapato, the commissioner of the Border Management Authority, commended the officials involved in this dynamic operation, highlighting their dedication to maintaining border law enforcement and implementing strict control measures to detect and prevent illegal activities.

It is crucial to raise awareness about the dangers of date rape drugs, such as Rohypnol. According to Wits University, these drugs can be easily slipped into a drink without detection due to their tasteless nature.
Victims are often unaware that they have been drugged until they experience symptoms such as weakness, confusion, and even loss of consciousness. The effects of the drug mimic intoxication, making it difficult for victims to defend themselves or remember what happened while under its influence.
Some of the serious problems that can arise from consuming Rohypnol or similar club drugs include difficulty standing, problems with movement, impaired speech, dizziness, and excessive sleepiness.
The Wits University website strongly advises individuals to remain vigilant and cautious in social settings where these drugs may be present.
