A four-month-old baby has been reunited with his family after being kidnapped outside his home in Dobsonville, Soweto, on Tuesday.
A manhunt has been initiated for the perpetrators, according to police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe.
With the assistance of specialised units, the police anti-kidnapping task force was able to rescue the baby boy within 24 hours after his kidnapping.
According to Mathe, the SAPS squad tracked the baby down to the Roodepoort mining region shortly after 11 p.m. on the same night.
“The infant was rescued and taken to a nearby health facility for medical examination. Once cleared, the baby was reunited with his parents.
“A manhunt has been launched for the kidnappers, who when police approached the area fled into bushes, evading arrest,” she said.
According to unconfirmed reports, a ransom was asked after the baby was kidnapped from his mother. Mathe did not respond to this.
Anybody with information on the incident can call their local police station or Crime Stoppers at 08600-10111.
