According to Katlego Mogale, the spokesperson for the Hawks, various highly skilled crime-fighting teams collaborated in this operation.
The successful interception of the drugs was made possible through the efforts of the Trilateral Planning Cell, a joint initiative by the Ministries responsible for law enforcement in South Africa, Mozambique, and Tanzania.
The purpose of this team is to combat the trafficking of heroin along the southern route.
The South African Narcotic Bureau, which operates under the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, received information from the Witrivier K9 unit regarding a truck suspected of transporting illegal drugs.
The Hawks’ Secunda SANEB, along with the Elukwatini Local Criminal Record Centre, Elukwatini Fire Department, and SAPS Badplaas, intercepted the identified truck and escorted it back to the station.
The Elukwatini Fire Department played a crucial role in revealing a hidden compartment within the truck, which contained 250 bricks of heroin weighing 1 kilogram each. The estimated street value of these drugs is R75 million.
SurgeZirc SA gathered that, an ongoing investigation is being conducted to determine how the truck managed to enter South Africa without undergoing thorough inspection at the border.
