A pastor and councillor from KwaZulu-Natal was shot and killed in front of his church congregation while delivering a sermon.
John Myaka, who served as an African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) councillor in Umhlathuze Municipality, was fatally shot on Tuesday afternoon at his church located in Nseleni Township, Richards Bay.

The mayor of Umhlathuze Municipality, Xolani Ngwezi, expressed deep sorrow and shock over the tragic passing of councillor Myaka, who was also a respected pastor.
The police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, stated that the Empangeni police were investigating the murder.
According to reports, the incident took place at the church while pastor Myaka was preaching. Ngwezi praised Myaka, highlighting his important role as a member of the council and his dedication to the community.
He emphasized that Myaka’s commitment to ethical standards was unwavering, despite numerous attempts to bribe him or offer him positions of power.
Ngwezi expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding pastor Myaka’s death, noting that eyewitnesses reported he was shot by an unknown assailant while delivering his sermon.

Two other gunmen who were present quickly fled the scene. The municipality is fully cooperating with law enforcement agencies in their investigation of this appalling act.
The loss of pastor Myaka is not only a tragedy for his loved ones but also for the City of Umhlathuze and its residents, who have lost a diligent and principled representative, said Ngwezi.
