
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) revealed that a mother from KwaZulu-Natal chained her 7-year-old daughter inside their makeshift home in Redcliffe, Veralum.
The woman, who allegedly shackled her daughter to a roof rafter, had left the child restrained since the morning.

Officers from RUSA discovered the child with shackles and a lock around her ankles.
The child was discovered as members of the community passing by glanced into the window after hearing a child cry for help.
“RUSA received a call from a resident in the informal settlement in Redcliffe, Veralum, requesting assistance after a mob began assaulting the mother of the child.
According to the caller, residents walking past the informal home peered through a window and noticed a female child shackled with a metal chain.
The chain was fastened with a lock, as per the picture, and the opposite end was secured to a rafter along the roof. The child is believed to be approximately 7 years old.”

According to RUSA spokeswoman Prem Balram, the mother escaped the mob and locked herself in her home with her daughter.
The mother and daughter were taken to the Veralum Police Station, where an investigation is currently underway.
