Letsitele police in the Mopani District have detained a 39-year-old man for reportedly kidnapped and brutally abusing his 35-year-old wife in Mamitwa village.
The man was scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Monday at the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court. Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the Limpopo provincial police spokesperson, described the heinous attack on Saturday evening.
“The suspect allegedly kidnapped and assaulted his wife around 7 pm, leaving her naked in the bushes,” Ledwaba explained.
The victim and her sister-in-law were walking home from an event when the suspect, her husband, drove towards them at high speed and attempted to hit her with the vehicle, according to the police report.
“The suspect aggressively ordered the victim into the vehicle and drove off to their home at Nwajaheni village,” Ledwaba added.
The police were notified and launched an investigation, during which they discovered and stopped the suspect’s vehicle. According to Ledwaba, the suspect lied about his wife’s location, bringing police to his house, where they discovered the missing woman’s blood-stained garments.
During the investigation, authorities received word that the victim was at the local police station. A passer-by discovered her naked and severely beaten in the bushes and saved her. The husband was later arrested on the scene.
The husband’s acts were sharply denounced by Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo.
“We will not tolerate those who use women as punching bags, exploiting their vulnerability. This inhumane behavior must stop right now,” Hadebe remarked.
