The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has convicted Mozambican citizen Anselma George Mahumane, 35, for the rape of two teenage girls, ages 13 and 16, kidnapping, and assault in a tragic case that has shocked the community.
The crimes were committed in Tsakane, an Ekurhuleni township.
According to the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), the 13-year-old victim was severely attacked on her way home to Tsakane extension 1 on the evening of December 4, 2013.

Mahumane allegedly approached her near a fire station, overpowered her, and strangled her until she passed out.
He had raped her and then left her lying on the ground.
The young girl had regained consciousness and approached the police officers she had encountered on her way home for assistance.
They had quickly helped her report the event and get medical attention.
Three years later, on December 3, 2016, a 16-year-old girl became a victim of Mahumane’s heinousness.
Mahumane and two unidentified accomplices had assaulted her at knifepoint as she walked home from the store.
They then took turns raping her before pulling her to a neighbouring veld and abandoning her there.

The traumatised teenager had reported the horrible crime to police.
Mahumane was arrested initially but released in April 2017 after a magistrate declined to postpone the case for DNA evidence, resulting in the case being struck off the court roll.
But, Mahumane was arrested again in 2020 after committing another rape.
He was sentenced to ten years direct jail for the third offence in July 2021.
Mahumane had pleaded not guilty throughout the trial and claimed to be in a relationship with the 16-year-old complainant.
State advocate Salome Scheepers, on the other hand, presented convincing evidence that destroyed his false narrative.
The court was convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that Mahumane had raped both teenage girls, and he was convicted.
The case has been scheduled for a pre-sentencing report on August 30 and 31, 2023, during which the court will consider several elements to establish a suitable sentence.
