
Gauteng police have asked anyone with information on a recent shootout between suspected rival mining gangs in Riverlea, south of Johannesburg, to come forward.
Residents have asked President Cyril Ramaphosa and Police Minister Bheki Cele to help increase security in Riverlea.
According to police, at least five persons were killed in Riverlea and the nearby Zamimpilo informal settlement.
Mavela Masondo, a provincial police spokesperson, said: “Police have deployed members from the tactical response team and public order policing to monitor the area.
“A case of murder with five counts has been opened for investigation. Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in the apprehension of the suspects to please call the nearest police station.”
