In response to widespread criticism following recent API changes, Reddit has made another controversial decision by announcing the phasing out of its coins and awards system.
While the platform assures users that a new reward system is in the works, no specific details have been provided regarding its expected launch date. Until now, users have been able to purchase Reddit Coins and utilize them to grant awards to fellow Redditors.

Effective immediately, Reddit will discontinue the sale of new coins. However, all existing awards and coins will remain accessible until September 12, 2023.
In an official blog post, Reddit explained that this change aims to simplify its platform. The company acknowledged user feedback, which expressed dissatisfaction with the “clutter from awards and all the steps required to award content.”
Consequently, Reddit intends to completely reshape how rewards function on the platform but refrained from disclosing specific plans for the new system even after SurgeZirc SA reached out.
The blog post stated, “It has become evident that awards and coins, as they currently exist, need to be reevaluated and phased out.”
“Rewarding content and contribution, as well as something extraordinary, will remain fundamental to Reddit. We will provide more information in the upcoming months about this new direction.”
For context, the Reddit community utilized coins and awards to acknowledge exceptional contributions from fellow members. These awards were visible as small icons accompanying posts on the platform.
Initially introducing Reddit Gold, the platform expanded to include Reddit Silver, Platinum, Ternium, and Argentium awards. Presently, there are over 50 award types available on the platform.
Reddit has promised to share further details about a “new direction for awarding” that enables redditors to empower one another and establish more meaningful ways of rewarding high-quality contributions.
The company’s ultimate goal for the issue is to create a user-friendly system that is straightforward and comprehensible.
However, Reddit’s decision to sunset the current rewards system without an immediate replacement in place has sparked disappointment among users, as it leaves the platform without a functioning rewards system.
