Despite all odds, the South African women’s national football team Banyana Banyana gave their best to raise the South African flag and bring happiness to their country when they defeated Italy to advance to the World Cup last 16.
Banyana Banyana triumphed 3-2 in a tense match on Wednesday at New Zealand’s Wellington Regional Stadium.
Their victory constituted a great recovery after losing their opening game to Sweden and drawing with Argentina. The squad needed to win in order to avoid having to leave early in the competition.
Their problems with the South African Football Association (Safa) were revealed just days before they left for the World Cup.
Banyana Banyana players voiced dissatisfaction with playing their World Cup send-off match against Botswana at the Tsakane Stadium in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, in July.
They hoped to perform at a better facility, such as the FNB or Orlando stadiums.
The players were also upset that they were not treated with decency in comparison to their male counterparts. This includes monetary incentives as well as overall treatment of the team.
Notwithstanding these obstacles, Banyana Banyana has provided South Africa with something to be proud of.
