Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, John Steenhuisen, has come forward to defend the party’s controversial election advert that features images of the South African flag in flames.
Despite facing widespread criticism, Steenhuisen argues that the advert serves as a stark reminder to voters who may consider supporting an ANC, EFF, and MK party coalition in the upcoming national and provincial elections.

Steenhuisen refers to this potential coalition as a “doomsday coalition” that could lead to economic decline for the country.
The DA’s election campaign, under the theme “Rescue SA,” aims to highlight the potential consequences of such a coalition. The advert, which was launched on Sunday, has already garnered over three million views across various platforms, including social media.
The controversial imagery used in the advert, particularly the burning flag, has sparked outrage and led to calls for legal action. However, the DA stands firm behind its message.
According to Steenhuisen, the flag is used as an allegory for the problems currently facing South Africa. The country’s struggling economy, infrastructure, unemployment rate, and child malnutrition are all depicted as burning flames, symbolizing the setbacks the nation is experiencing.
Steenhuisen emphasises that the advert is a call to prevent further deterioration by rejecting the ANC doomsday coalition with the EFF. Despite the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture considering legal action against the advert and the party, the DA remains undeterred in its stance.
Steenhuisen has made promises of creating two million jobs for the people of the province if the DA is elected to govern.
