In a significant development, a suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of Ben Gumbi, a local businessman who was tragically gunned down in Rustenburg. The incident, which took place in broad daylight, involved two suspects travelling in a blue Volkswagen Polo.
The suspect, identified as Sibongiseni Ngubane, was apprehended in Germiston after attending a court case related to a separate charge of armed robbery. This breakthrough came as a result of diligent police work and collaboration between law enforcement agencies.
Ngubane, aged 33, appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and was subsequently remanded in custody pending further investigation. He is expected to make a second court appearance on Tuesday, as authorities continue to gather evidence and build a solid case against him.
Gumbi was gunned down by two males outside a restaurant in the Rustenburg Central Business District (CBD).
In the viral video footage of the incident, Gumbi can be seen looking at his phone in front of white tables and chairs.
Two men creep up behind him, firing at almost point-blank range. He collapses after he is shot in the head and torso.
Mokgwabone said Gumbi had just arrived at the coffee shop when he was shot.
