A fire outbreak occurred at a retirement home in Milan during the early hours of Friday, resulting in the death of six individuals.
Several residents were also hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.
The fire brigade shared on Twitter that six people had lost their lives, while numerous others had been evacuated by firefighters from the building.
An AFP photographer witnessed the removal of two victims’ bodies from the three-story facility, which reportedly accommodates 210 individuals in the southern part of the city.
The cause of the fire was yet to be determined, as stated by the fire brigade.
Among the victims, five were women aged between 69 and 87, while the sixth was a 73-year-old man, according to the AGI news agency.
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala revealed that the fire seemed to have originated in a room where two female residents resided, both of whom perished in the flames.
Although the fire did not spread beyond that particular room, the smoke claimed the lives of four other residents and left two others in critical condition, Sala added.
