Two people were electrocuted, one in Soweto while trying to cut live power cables, and another found dead inside a transformer in Randburg as reported by City Power officials in Johannesburg.
These events highlight the dangers of tampering with infrastructure and the severe consequences of stealing cables.

City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, expressed regret over the loss of life and warned that cable theft disrupts essential services like water and health, affects economic activity, and leaves communities in darkness.
The authorities suspect there may be a well-organized cable theft syndicate using advanced tools to target valuable cables and infrastructure.
So far in July, there have been over 114 reports of cable theft and vandalism, leading to 15 arrests with the help of the police and City Power Security Risk Management Team. Last year, there were 2,347 incidents of cable theft, resulting in 278 arrests.

The areas most affected by cable theft and vandalism include Randburg, Roodepoort, the Inner City, and Lenasia.
City Power is now working to protect its infrastructure and find ways to address this serious problem, urging everyone to be vigilant and prevent further tragedies.
