Attention all binge-watchers, telephones, couch potatoes, and TV lovers! The moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived—the Emmy nominations for 2023 are finally here.
Mark your calendars because the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, officially known as the 2023 Emmys, will take place this fall on Monday, September 18, 2023.
The nominees were announced during an exciting virtual broadcast on July 12, with the hosting duties shared by Yvette Nicole Brown from “Community” and “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” along with Television Academy Chair Frank Scherma.
This year’s Emmys will recognize the crème de la crème of the small screen, acknowledging outstanding programming that aired between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023. Last year’s ceremony, hosted by the talented Kenan Thompson, delivered unforgettable moments that etched their place in history.
Who could forget Sheryl Lee Ralph winning her first-ever Emmy and captivating the audience with a mesmerizing acceptance speech? Or Jennifer Coolidge snatching the prize for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her unforgettable performance in “White Lotus”? And who can overlook the unexpected interruption of Quinta Brunson’s acceptance speech for Outstanding Writing by none other than Jimmy Kimmel? Furthermore, Zendaya’s groundbreaking win as the first Black woman to achieve Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series twice, making her the youngest two-time winner in the awards’ history, left a lasting impression.
Will this year’s Emmy Awards surpass those moments? We certainly have a hunch that it just might. The shows and stars receiving nods at this year’s ceremony include the final season of “Succession,” HBO’s record-breaking adaptation of the video game “The Last Of Us” (with a special shoutout to Bella Ramsey!), the groundbreaking sophomore season of “Abbott Elementary” that redefined network television, Jeremy Allen White and “The Bear,” “Yellowjackets,” Jenna Ortega and “Wednesday,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Beef,” Evan Peters and “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “The White Lotus,” “Ted Lasso,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
Jenna Ortega has the honor of making history twice this year. Her nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series not only makes her the second-youngest nominee in the category’s history but also the first Latina nominated since America Ferrera’s nomination for “Ugly Betty” in 2007. In fact, she is only the third Latina nominee ever, with Rita Moreno receiving a nomination in 1983 for “9 to 5.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, if 20-year-old Ortega wins for her exceptional performance in “Wednesday,” she will become the youngest winner ever in the category, breaking America Ferrera’s record, who won at the age of 23.
HBO’s “The Last Of Us” also made history by becoming the first live-action video game adaptation to receive a nomination from a major Hollywood awards institution, sweeping an astonishing 24 nominations at this year’s Emmys.
