Zulfa Jacobs, who was convicted of smothering her 2-year-old son, Tariq, to death, has been released on parole after spending twelve years in prison.
The decision to grant her parole has sparked outrage among activists, who are calling for a review of similar cases by the Department of Social Development to ensure child welfare in situations where parents struggle to cope or neglect their responsibilities.

According to Candice van Reenen, the spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, Jacobs was granted parole in February, and she was released from prison in March during the observance of the holy month of Ramadaan, while both her family and Tariq’s family were in mourning.
Jacobs will remain under parole supervision for the next nine years, and her release has brought attention to the need for a comprehensive approach in dealing with cases involving parental challenges, urging the government to offer adequate support and protection for vulnerable children.
