It’s not the first time Bolt has faced criticism for the actions of its drivers. In March, Emmanuel Mudua, a driver for the e-hailing service, was sentenced to two life imprisonment terms for his heinous crimes.
Mudua had also received a 60-year sentence for rape, kidnapping, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Reports from YFM indicate that Mudua had raped four women passengers between January and February 2022. These shocking incidents only further emphasize the urgent need for improved safety measures within the e-hailing industry.

Following the recent incident in Cape Town, the driver allegedly responsible for the stabbing turned himself over to the police. Bolt’s PR manager, Sandra Buyole, expressed deep concern and stated that the company is working closely with the authorities. The implicated driver’s account has been blocked.
While Bolt’s response is a step in the right direction, many are still left wondering why more proactive measures haven’t been implemented to prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place.
It is essential for e-hailing services like Bolt to prioritize the safety and well-being of their passengers. This includes thorough background checks, regular driver training, and swift action against any driver found guilty of criminal activities.

Furthermore, the South African government should also play a role in regulating the e-hailing industry and enforcing stricter safety standards. The safety of passengers, particularly women, should never be compromised.
Lerato Kganyago’s demand for accountability is a powerful reminder that the voices of victims should be heard and that action must be taken to ensure their safety. It is time for Bolt and other e-hailing services to step up and prioritize the well-being of their passengers.
As South Africans, we should stand together in demanding safer transportation options and holding companies accountable for their actions. Let’s make sure that incidents like these are not brushed aside, but rather serve as a catalyst for change.
